Above: In this picture is a premium quality Freshwater Panther Crab.
Comments: These are premium quality Crabs that you rarely see in live fish stores or in online stores.
Premium Crabs like these Crabs are more hardy and more colorful than Crabs from other sources.

Origin: This Crabs ancestors lived in Lake Matano in Sulawesi in Indonesia, where they were collected and shipped to us.
Maximum Size: In aquariums, this Crab often grows to be about 3" across, but they live many years and continue to grow slowly for their entire lives.
Compatibility: Some recommended tank mates include any community fish, some small fish may be easy for these Crabs to get their claws on, so watch out.
Click here to read more about compatible groups of inverts.
Temperature: This Crab can live pretty well from about 70 to 80 degrees F., but they're probably most comfortable from about 75 to 78 degrees F.

Feeding: Premium Fish Food Pellets. Click here to learn more about and shop online for premium fish foods.
Water Conditions: This Crab can tolerate a wide range of water conditions.
Probably a pH from 7 to 8 with moderate hardness is best.
Most water in the US seems to be OK, so it's probably best NOT to adjust the pH or the hardness of the water.
Here in our facilities the water is hard and the pH is usually about 7.8. We ship them in this water.
Aquarium Size: These guys can do well living in a 20 to 30-gallon aquarium, but of course bigger is better.
Decor: These Crabs do not need gravel, and a layer of gravel more than 1/4" thick will usually fill with bits of uneaten food that will contaminate the water.
Rocks, and out of water areas would be an excellent addition for these guys.

Live Plants are beautiful, improve the water quality.

Aquarium Filter: Bio-Wheel Filters are highly recommended.
A Penguin 200B Filter in an aquarium with 20 to 30-gallons is OK.

The addition of Lava Rocks will keep nitrates in the ideal range. Click here to learn more about using Lava Rocks in aquariums.
Life Span: This Crab can live for a few years, these Crabs will eventually need to be introduced to saltwater in their aquarium for them to live that long.
Gender: Males show off great color, like you can see in the picture, and females are more dull.
Breeding: There have been some attempts with breeding these Crabs, but we have not heard of any success.
Popularity: These freshwater Crabs are rather popular.
Names: This species name is Paralthelphusa patherina.
Variations: We do not know of any variations.
