Above: In this picture a young premium quality Plaid Juli Cichlid is swimming in one of our aquariums, when one of us snapped this picture.
Right now these Plaid Julis are Wild fish that were collected in Southern Lake Tanganyika, and they look better than the fish in the picture, which already looks very interesting.
Comments: These fish have intricate plaid patterns of brown/black and white/beige.
Origin: The ancestors of the Plaid Juli Cichlid lived in Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. But now they live in aquariums all over the world.
Maximum Size: In aquariums, they can grow to be about 5" long, including their tails, which is a nice size for aquariums.
Behaviors: Plaid Juli Cichlids are usually rather aggressive fish, but they are much less aggressive than the Mbunas from Lake Malawi and do not do well in aquariums with Mbunas. Julies stay very close to the rocks. Much closer that Mbunas.
Compatibility: Some recommended tank mates include other small Cichlids from Lake Tanganyika like Brichardi and Daffodils, and maybe a small Synodontis Catfish, but Synodontis will usually find all the babies at night and eat them.
Click here for or more about Synodontis Catfish. Click here to read more about compatible groups of pet fish.
Temperature: Plaid Juli Cichlids live best from about 75 to 80-degrees F. with 78 being perhaps ideal. Click here to learn about aquarium temperature, aquarium thermometers, and aquarium heaters.
Feeding: Premium Fish Food Pellets and Flakes are the best foods for Julies. It would be best to feed them small pellets when they're small, then gradually increase the size of the pellets, as they grow larger. In their natural habitat these Plaid Juli Cichlids pick out and eat small invertebrates that live among the algae on the rocks. So it's beneficial to feed them some frozen brine shrimp and frozen bloodworms. Click here to learn more about and shop online for premium fish foods.
Water Conditions: These fish do best in water with a pH of 7.8 to 8.8 that's very hard. They do not adapt well to water with a pH lower than 7.5. So it's best to buy special minerals, called Tanganyika Salts, to add to the water and to do regular small partial water changes not to exceed 20% of the aquarium's water in one day. Click here for a lot more information about aquarium water conditions.
Aquarium Size: Plaid Juli Cichlids will eventually need to live in an aquarium with at least 50-gallons of water. Each Plaid Juli will need at least 5-gallons of water. Decor: Plaid Julies do not need any gravel in their aquarium, and a layer of gravel more than 1/4" thick will usually fill with bits of uneaten food that will contaminate the water. Click here for more about aquarium gravel.
Live plants are beautiful and improve the water quality, but aquariums with Plaid Julies rarely have plants.
Aquarium Filter: Bio-Wheel Filters are highly recommended. A Penguin 350B Filter is right filter for a 30 to 60-gallon aquarium. Click here to learn more about aquarium filters.
The addition of Lava Rocks will keep nitrates in the ideal range, and Julies love lava rocks. Click here to learn more about using Lava Rocks in aquariums.
Life Span: Plaid Juli Cichlids can live for several years. Keep the water conditions excellent and feed them premium foods, and they'll most likely breed and produce the next generation of fish for your aquarium.
Gender: The Bailey Bros, DrTom and Nevin, raised this species for many years and never could really determine the gender, and they had many pairs. The Bros noticed that there was often a smaller fish that stayed close to the base of their territory and a larger fish that strayed farther away. The smaller fish constantly came out of the cave to interact with the larger one. All of this is very interesting.
Breeding: Plaid Juli Cichlids are Cave Spawners. Females lay eggs in a cave and the male fertilizes the eggs. Then the male and female work together to protect and guard their egg and then their fry, after the eggs hatch. Click here for a lot more about breeding various tropical fish in aquariums.
