Above: In the picture. just above, a young 1.5" long premium quality Sunflower Cichlid is swimming in one of our aquariums, when one of us snapped this picture.
Comments: As you see in the picture above, Sunflower Cichlids have gray-tan bodies with with lots of orange speckles and beautiful long lyretails.
This is perhaps the most colorful Neolamprologus species.
Origin: The ancestors of Sunflower Cichlids lived in Lake Tanganyika. But now they live in aquariums all over the world.
Maximum Size: In aquariums, they can grow to be about 3.5" long, including their tails, which is a nice size for aquariums with at least 50-gallons of water. Behaviors: Sunflowers are usually quite aggressive and even more aggressive when getting ready to lay eggs and then protecting their babies.
Compatibility: Some recommended tank mates include other Tanganyika Cichlids but not Cichlids from Lake Malawi nor from Lake Victoria.
These Sunflower Cichlids are often kept with Synodontis Catfish, but Synodontis will eat baby fish.

In their natural habitat Sunflower Cichlids eat small crustaceans and invertebrates. Click here to learn more about and shop online for premium fish foods. Water Conditions: These fish can adapt to most types of water, and so as usual it's best not to try to change the pH or alkalinity.

Each Cichlid will need at least 3-gallons of water. Decor: Sunflowers do not need gravel, and a layer of gravel more than 1/4" thick will usually fill with bits of uneaten food that will contaminate the water.
Click here for more about aquarium gravel.Live plants are beautiful and improve the water quality, but most aquariums with Sunflower Cichlids do not have live plants. Aquarium Filter: Bio-Wheel Filters are highly recommended. Most 50-gallon aquariums need a Penguin 350B Filter, and this is sort of the minimum set up for Cichlids.
Better is a 120, 150, or 200-gallon aquarium with as many Penguin 350B Filters as will fit across the back.

Life Span: Sunflower Cichlids can live for several years. Keep the water conditions excellent and feed them premium foods, and they'll most likely breed and produce the next generation of fish for your aquarium. Gender: It is usually very difficult to distinguish males from females, but we think females tend to be smaller.
Breeding: Sunflower Cichlids lay eggs in a cave and carefully protect their eggs and then their babies.
