Above: In this picture is a nice Freshwater Persimmon Orange Lobster.
Comments: These are lobsters that you rarely see in live fish stores. Premium lobsters like these lobsters are more hardy and more colorful than lobsters from other sources.
Maximum Size: In aquariums, this lobster often grows to be about 5" long, but they live many years and continue to grow slowly for their entire lives.
Behaviors: They usually stay at the bottom of the tank, and have quite a personality.
Compatibility: Some recommended tank mates include any community fish, some small fish may be easy for these lobsters to get their claws on, so watch out.

Temperature: This lobster can live pretty well from about 70 to 80 degrees F., but they're probably most comfortable from about 75 to 78 degrees F.

Feeding: Premium Fish Food Pellets.

Water Conditions: This lobster can tolerate a wide range of water conditions. Probably a pH of about 7 with moderate hardness is best.
Most water in the US seems to be OK, so it's probably best NOT to adjust the pH or the hardness of the water.
Here in our facilities the water is hard and the pH is usually about 7.8. We ship them in this water.
Aquarium Size: These guys can do well living in a 20-gallon aquarium, but of course bigger is better.
Decor: These lobsters do not need gravel, and a layer of gravel more than 1/4" thick will usually fill with bits of uneaten food that will contaminate the water.
Rocks and out of water areas would be an excellent addition for these guys.

Live Plants are beautiful, improve the water quality.

Aquarium Filter: Bio-Wheel filters are highly recommended. A Penguin 200 Filter in an aquarium with 30-gallons is OK.

The addition of Lava Rocks will keep nitrates in the ideal range. Click here to learn more about using Lava Rocks in aquariums.
Life Span: This lobster can live for a few years.
Gender: Males are usually more colorful with larger claws, females are also usually smaller.
Breeding: There have been some attempts with breeding these lobsters.
Popularity: These freshwater lobsters are rather popular.
Names: This species name is Procambarus clarkii. Thank you to Jake S. for this information.
Variations: There are some variations throughout the US.
