These are Puffers
that you rarely see in live fish stores.
Premium Puffers like these
are more hardy and more colorful than Puffers from other sources.
Mbu Puffers are captured as wild fish in parts of the Congo River and
parts of Lake Tanganyika in Africa.
In aquariums, this Puffer can grow to be at least 26"
long, but they live many years and continue to grow slowly
for their entire lives, so it's possible that they may grow longer than
They can be aggressive
toward other fish.
Some recommended tank mates include equally aggressive fish, or they should
be kept in a species only tank.
Small fish may be eaten by the Puffer, so be careful
when selecting tankmates.
This Puffer can live pretty well from about
70 to 80 degrees F., but they're probably most comfortable
from 75 to 78

This Puffer can tolerate a wide range of water conditions.
a pH of about 7 with moderate hardness is best.

pH or the hardness of the water.

These guys can do well living in a 30-gallon aquarium,
when they're small, but of course bigger is better.
These Puffers do not need gravel, and a layer of gravel more than
1/4" thick will usually fill with bits of uneaten food that will contaminate

species is small, but eventually one of these Puffers will need

This Puffer can live for several years,
maybe many years with excellent care, including excellent water and premium
It is very hard to distinguish males from females, only when trying to breed
is it easier to determine, as a female may become plumper.
There aren't any known cases of successfully breeding these Puffers
These freshwater Puffers are rather popular.
This species name is Tetraodon
This Pufferfish occurs over a wide area in Central Africa, and
so we expect there may be variations.
