Above: In this picture a young male premium quality Lake Malawi Strawberry Peacock is swimming in one of our aquariums, when one of us snapped this picture.
Comments: These are fabulous fish, the males develop very bright colors. Females are pinkish-grey.
Origin: Peacocks of Malawi are a family of closely related fish in an extended family of fish, called Cichlids. The ancestors of the Peacocks lived only in Lake Malawi in East Africa.
But now they live in aquariums all over the world. There are several species of Peacocks for sale in this store.
All the Malawi Peacocks are said to live away from the piles of huge rocks in Lake Malawi, where the more aggressive Mbuna fish live, but not too far away from the rocks in the open water, which is the domain of some larger so-called Haplochromis Cichlids.
Maximum Size: In aquariums males can grow to be about 7" long, including their tails, which is a nice size for aquariums.
Females are smaller and remain grey or dull, without the brilliant colors shown by males.

Better is a 120, 150, or 200-gallon aquarium with as many Penguin 350B Filters as will fit across the back.

Breeding: Peacock from Malawi are mouthbrooders. A female lays eggs, a male fertilizes the eggs, and the female picks up the eggs in her mouth.
She'll brood them for about 3-weeks, then release them in the aquarium. They are miniture versions of their mother and very cute!
