In this picture is a nice premium quality
Freshwater Ocellated Puffer, swimming in one of our
aquariums, when one of our crew members took this picture.
These are Puffers that we
rarely see in the live fish stores or in the online stores that we visit.
Premium quality Puffers like these eels are more hardy and more
colorful than Puffers from other sources.
This Pufferfish lives in both freshwater and brackish water in
India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar or the Malay archipelago,
where it was collected by skillful collectors of wild fish.
So that now
this Pufferfish lives in aquariums all over the world.
In aquariums this Puffer can grow to be about 5.5"
long, but they live many years and continue to grow slowly
for their entire lives.
They can be aggressive toward other fish.
Some recommended tank mates include equally aggressive or fast swimming
fish, or this species should be kept in a species only tank.
Small fish may be eaten by this Puffer, so be
careful when selecting tankmates.
This Puffer can live pretty well from about 70 to 80
degrees F., but they're probably most comfortable from
about 75 to 78 degrees F.

Pufferfish need to eat some snails, shrimp, lobsters, and shellfish to sharpen
and wear down their teeth.
This Puffer can tolerate a wide range of water conditions.
a pH of about 7 with moderate hardness is best.
in the US seems to be OK, so it's probably best NOT to adjust the pH or
the hardness of the water.
Here in our
facilities the water is hard and the pH is usually about 7.8.

When small this Pufferfish can do well living in a 30-gallon
aquarium, but of course bigger is better.
Eventually this fish will need
an aquarium with at least 50-gallons of water.
This Pufferfish does not need gravel, and a layer of gravel more
than 1/4" thick will usually fill with bits of uneaten food that will contaminate

Plants are beautiful, improve the water quality.

Penguin 200B Filter in an aquarium with 30-gallons is OK,
when this Puffer is less than 3" long.

This Puffer can live for several years,
maybe many years with excellent care, including excellent water and premium
It's very hard to distinguish the males from the females.
may become plumper, as she fills with eggs before spawning.
There aren't any known cases of successfully breeding these puffers
in an aquarium.
These are rare but somewhat popular.
